Forts of India Featured on Stamps

India Post issued a set of four stamps featuring the famous Forts of India located in different parts of the country.

The forts in India those structures erected for different purposes according to the need of time. These medieval structures are commendable not only for their architecture but also for the history it narrates.

Released in Jun 1984 these stamps depict four famous Forts of India viz. Fort of Gwalior, Fort of Vellore, Simhagad Fort and Fort of Jodhpur.

Built During 8th Century AD, the Gwalior for is a hill fort built by Man Singh Tomar near Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. The fort shows south and north Indian architectural styles.

The fort of Vellore belongs to the period of Vijayanagara Empire and is known for its grand ramparts, wide moat and robust masonry.

Located near Pune, Maharashtra the Simhagad fort is a famous tourist destination for the local tourists. This hill fort is built during the Times of Shivaji Maharaj and shows a typical style of Maratha Architecture.

The Mehrangarh fort of Jodhpur is one of the largest forts of India exhibiting the typical architectural style of Rajasthan and was resided by the Rathore clan.

Issued with different denominations from Rs.0.5 to Rs2.00, the stamps beautifully depict the images of the structure against the clear blue sky.
