Harihari I Gold Varaha Coin

This gold coin was issued by Harihara I of Vijaynagar Empire. Vijaynagar Empire was one of the most important empires of Medieval India. It was established in the 14th Century and ruled for about three centuries. Harihari I with his brother Bukka had founded this empire in the year 1336CE.Harihari I was also the founder of Sangam dynasty, the first among the four dynasties that had ruled Vijayanagar Empire. After coming to the power Harihari I had constructed the fort at Barkuru on the west coast which constitutes the modern-day Karnataka. HariHari I was also associated with the Hoysala Kingdom, A nephew of Hosayala king Veera Ballala III had married to the daughter of Harihara I. In some of the other inscription founded Harihari i is also referred as ‘Karnataka Vidhya Vilas’ meaning ‘Master of Great Knowledge and Skills’. ‘Bhashegetappuvarayaraganda’(Punisher of those feudatories who don’t keep their promises), ‘Arirayavibhada’ (fire of enemy king).
This gold Varaha which weighs around 3.37g is estimated for 18,000 at in the upcoming internet auction of Oswal, which will be held in Chennai on 22nd July 2018. The obverse of the coin is inscribed with the image of ‘Hanumana facing towards the right with knees slightly bent with left hand resting on his left Knee and right hand raised up. The reverse of the coin is inscribed with ‘Sri Vira Harihara’.
