A Cover that Survived the Hindenburg Crash to be Auctioned

Cherrystone auction would be offering interesting stamps and other philatelic items for sale on 17th and 18th July in New York City. One of the items is a partially burned cover which survived the 1937 Hindenburg crash. The cover has several 12½¢ Mercury stamps from the 1937 Netherlands set that was issued to celebrate the planned Fifth Boy Scout World Jamboree. The stamps are tied with two strikes from the Amsterdam Central Station postmark. The cover was sent to Ann Arbor, Mich and has a notarized affidavit from the addressee along with a Philatelic Foundation certificate.The airship was carrying eight mailbags. Over 160 letters and cards were destroyed in the crash. The starting bid for the item would be $10,000. Several other lots from a Scouts on stamps collection of the world will also be offered at the auction.
