Scientists of Ancient China Featured on Stamps

Hong Kong post issued a set of special stamps featuring Great Scientists of Ancient China showcasing the extraordinary scientific achievements in ancient times.

The Great Scientists of Ancient China featured on stamps are: Zhang Heng: an astronomer who invented world’s first seismoscope which became a useful instrument to decide the time and the direction of earthquakes. He featured on the stamp with $1.70 value.

Zu Chongzhi: he was both a mathematician and an astronomer. He is known to have calculated the value of pie, which is considered as the monumental achievement. He featured on the stamp with $2.90 value.

Guo Shoujing was an astronomer, mathematician and hydraulics expert. He is credited for simplifying system which, earlier, was very complex. He featured on the stamp with $3.70 value.

Li Shizhen the medical expert wrote a book compiling 1,892 medical substances which later turned out to be the great source of pharmacological taxonomy work at that time He featured on the stamp with $5 value.

This set of four stamps depicts four greatest achievers of the domains if astronomy, mathematics and medicine and one greatest contribution of these achievers along with a sketched portraits of them.
