Asutosh Mookerjee was a great judge, educationalist and lawyer. He was the first student to be awarded a dual degree (MA in Mathematics and Physics) from Calcutta University.Ashutosh was born in Calcutta on 29th June 1864, to Jagattarini Devi and Ganga Prasad Mukhopadhyaya. His father, who was a noted physician of his day, looked to his education himself. .
Perhaps the most emphatic figure of Indian education, he was a man of great personality, high self-respect, courage and towering administrative ability. The second Indian Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta for four consecutive two-year terms (1906–1914) and a fifth two-year term (1921–23). As a Vice-Chancellor he broke new ground in the system of education in this country and was a pioneer in introducing a modern system of education. .
He recognized the importance of Science and Technology in the modern world and established a University College of Science and Technology under the direction of Dr.P.C.Roy, a noted scientist. .
The India Postal Department issued postage stampon 29th June 1964 in the honor of this great personality. .
