A rare gold 50-gulden pattern coin struck in 1982 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Dutch-US relationship will be offered for sale by Schulman B.V. on 29th and 30th June in Amsterdam. No other coin of this type exists, making it extremely rare.Reagan was the US president during those days and thanked the Dutch monarch, Queen Beatrix in his speech by saying that New York was first New Amsterdam. Queen Beatrix and her husband, Prince Claus took part in several celebrations, visited Philadelphia and New York, and were welcomed by the president and first lady Nancy Reagan.
Prince Claus got a red leather-bound book with gold imprint featuring photos of Washington, D.C. as a gift from the US diplomats. In return, Ronald Reagan received a newly circulating commemorative 50 Guilders.
Generally, the state mint keeps two examples of such type of commemorative coins but no other example of this coin exist. Only silver examples are talked about in the 1982 law authorizing the 50-gulden coins. The offered coin is graded MS 64 by PCGS and although the coin looks prooflike or proof, in reality, they were struck using special polished dies with the description of ‘Prooflike’.
