Silver Rupee of Muhammad Adil Shah
2018-06-25 Mon
The beautiful coin depicted here is a silver Rupee of Jaunpur mint, issued during the reign of Muhammad Adil Shah of Delhi Sultanate. The obverse of the coin is engraved the Kalima -e- Taiyyiba ‘La Ilaha Illallahu Muhammad-ur-Rasulullah’ in rectangular border and name of the Khalifa-e-Rashidoons and title around. The reverse of the coin is inscribed with Persian legend ‘Sultan Muhammad 'Adil' Khallada Allah Mulkahuwa Saltanahu 'Ala Amrahu, and Nagari legend Sri Mahamadasahi; other titles around, and mint name in bottom margin. The coin is dated 964 and is stylistically very similar to the issues of Chunar, Jhusi and the very rare Prayag mints of the same year. Muhammad 'Adil's authority was recognized in the middle Gangetic plain for a short while before he was killed by Jalal Shah of Bengal in that year.
