Alivardi’s Silver Rupee of Mursidabad Mint

Alivardi Khan was the Nawab of Bengal during 1740 -1756 AD. He overthrows the Nasiri Dynasty and took the powers of the Nawab. He is one of the few Mughal era leaders known for his victory during the Battle of Burdwan against the Maratha Empire.A Shiite Muslim by religion, Alivardi Khan was the son of Mirza Muhammad Madani, who served Azam Shah, the son of the great Mughal ruler, Aurangzeb. His mother was a descendant of the Turkish tribe of Afshar.
The coin given in the image was issued during the reign of Alivardi Khan. It was struck at the Murshidabad mint in the name of Alamgir II. The obverse of the coin depicts the Persian legend ‘Alamgir Badshah Gazi’. The reverse of the coin inscribed with ‘Sanah Ahad Julus Mainamat Manus Zarb Murshidabad’.
