The Mughal Empire ruled the Indian Subcontinent during the medieval period. The golden period of Mughal Empire begins with the victory of Babar over Ibrahim Lodi in First Battle of Panipat in the year 1526 and it started declining with the death of Aurangzeb in the year 1707.

Shihabuddin Muhammad Shah Jahan Badshah Gazi was the fifth Mughal Emperor who ruled the dynasty from 1628 to 1658 AD. The reign of Shah Jahan is considered by the historian as the most glorious period of the Mughal rule in India.

One of his Silver half Rupee Nisar struck at Dar al-Khilafat Akbarabad mint in 1046 AH. The occasion for the Nisar is Aurangzeb’s marriage at Agra on Tuesday, May 1637 (23rd Zil Hijja 1046), to Dilras Banu Begum (daughter of Shah Nawaz Khan, son of Mirza Rustam Safavi) who became and remained Aurangzeb’s chief wife (Padshah Begham). When she died at Aurangabad in 1657, Aurangzeb built for her mausoleum modelled on the Taj Mahal called Bibi Ka Maqbar.

The obverse of this beautiful Rupee showed the Persian legend ‘Nisar Sahib-e-Qiran Sani Julus Sanah 10’. The reverse of the coin is inscribed with the legend ‘Zarb Dar al Khilafah Akbarabad Sanah 1046 Hijri’. This coin was sold for INR 2,25,000 by Classical Numismatic Gallery.
