Copper Coin of Devaraya II of Vijayanagar Empire

Vijayanagar was one of the most important empires of Medieval India. It was established in the 14th Century and had ruled for about three centuries. This dynasty was founded by two brothers Harihara and Bukka in the year 1336 CE. It was ruled by four different families of the Sangam Dynasty and is named after its capital, Vijayanagara, located in Karnataka. The history of Vijaynagar is full of warfares with Bahamian kingdom and other Muslim rulers in Northern Deccan part of India, which is also known as the Deccan Sultanate. This ruling dynasty came to an end when they were defeated by the Deccan Sultanate.Devaraya II was one of the greatest rulers of Sangama Dynasty. He succeeded his father Veera Vijaya Bukka Raya. Devaraya II was a forceful and powerful ruler. He had defeated the Gajapatis of Orya three times, first in the year 1427 CE, then in the year 1436 and lastly in the year 1441.
This copper coin was issued by Devaraya II. The obverse of this coin depicts an elephant facing towards the right. The reverse of this coin is inscribed with the Kannada legend written in three lines within the circle.
