2018-06-08 Fri
Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries and Charles F. Shreve together are conducting two auctions on 19th and 20th June at the Siegel galleries in New York City. Several classic and modern world stamps will be offered at the auctions. One of the highlights is an unused Canadian 1860 Newfoundland 1-shilling orange Stamp made on handmade paper without mesh. It is lightly hinged with original gum and is in great condition. It is the finest example of the rare variety. It was a part of Count Ferrary’s collection and features his small purple trefoil backstamp with the signature of Alberto Diena in pencil. It was offered for sale almost 100 years ago at the 1921 Ferrary sale. It has a listed market value of $37,500. However, they are difficult to be evaluated accurately.
Another highlight from the Robert B. Pildes collection is Israel’s 1948 Doar Ivri issue. A perf 10 by 10 3-mils orange stamp in a tab block of 20 comprising the bottom two rows would be offered with original-gum. Only six tab rows are recorded and the item carries an estimated value of $10,000 to $15,000.
