History of Princely State Broach (Bharuch)

Broach or Bharuch was a Princely State during British rule in India. It is located on the northern bank of river Narmada, about 30 miles from the Gulf of Cambay. It was one of the important ports on the sea route to Europe.The state of Broach has the very interesting history. During the ancient age, it was a ruled by Mauryan Empire Chandragupta and it is said to have resided at Suklatirtha. It was then passed into the hands of Western Kshatrapas. In around 5th Century, it was ruled by Chandragupta Vikramaditya and others rulers of Gupta Dynasty. Later it came under the Gurjar ancestry and then under the Rajputs. During the Muslim rule in Indian, it was also ruled by Gujarat Sultanate and it remains in their control until 1572, when it was annexed by Mughal Emperor Akbar. During the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, the state of Broach experienced the attack of Maratha. In the year 1803, it came in the hands of East India Company and thereafter it remained in under the British control.
This silver rupee was issued by Imtaya-ud-Daula weighs around 11.5g. It was issued by him in the name of Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II. The obverse side of this coin depicts name and title of Shah Alam II. The reverse side of this coin depicts the julus formula.
