Shah Jahan’s Gold Mohur Sold For INR 60,000

This gold mohur issued by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan was sold for INR 60,000 at Classical Numismatic Gallery Auction held in Delhi on 19th May 2018. The Mughal Empire ruled the Indian Subcontinent during the medieval period. The golden period of Mughal Empire begins with the victory of Babar over Ibrahim Lodi in First Battle of Panipat in the year 1526 and it started declining with the death of Aurangzeb in the year 1707.Shah Jahan was fifth Mughal Emperor of India. He was one of the greatest rulers of Mughal Empire. He was born as Prince Khurram to the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in the year 1592 CE. He is best known for ‘Taj Mahal’ which he build in the memory of his beloved wife ‘Mumtaz Mahal’. Another one of his famous creations is the Peacock Throne. His reign is also described as ‘Golden Age’ of Mughal Empire.
This gold mohur was issued by him in the Hijri Year 1062 during the 25th year of his reign. The obverse of the coin is inscribed with the name of the king as ‘Shah Jahan Badshah Ghazi’ within the dotted square, mint name Burhanpur and regnal year 25 in the margin. The reverse of the coin is inscribed with ‘Kalima’ within dotted square and name of the four Khalifa in the margin.
