India has always welcomed people from all religions and all religions of the world have flourished in India. This se-tenant of two stamps symbolizes the Indian tradition of unity in diversity and the concept of one people, one world.The stamps depict the Tabo Monastery situated in Tabo village of Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh. The monastery has nine temples, four decorated Stupas, and cave shrines. It has wall painting depicting Budha’s life and stories from Jataka tales. There are many priceless collections of Thankas (scroll paintings), manuscripts, well-preserved statues, frescos and extensive murals which cover almost every wall.
Tabo is noted for continuously operating Buddhist enclave in both India and the Himalayas. It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as a national historic treasure of India.
The first stamps depicts the monastery as it stands in Spiti overshadowed by snow clad mountain while the second is a reconstruction of painting from a southern wall of the main hall.
