Akbar was the third ruler of the Mughal Dynasty in India from 1556 to 1605 AD. Coins of Akbar reflect the power of this mighty emperor and they are the most exquisite and varied among the ones that were minted by other Mughal emperors.Gold ¼ Mohur of 2.66g was minted at Agra in the reign of Akbar. The obverse of the coin depicts the Ilahi creed ‘Allahu Akbar Jalla Jalalahu’ while the reverse of the coin bore the name of the mint, Ilahi year and month of the issue ‘Zarb Agra Ilahi 48 Bahman’.
The weight of this coin suggests that it was struck to the 9 rupee standard, mentioned in the Ain-e-Akbari as the ‘Adl-Gutka’. This coin was listed at INR 12,00,000 – 15,00,000 at Classical Numismatic Gallery.
