Copper coin of Sangam Chola Period

Sangam Age was the glorious period from 300 BCE to 300 CE in South India. The powerful dynasties like Chera, Chola, and Pandya were part of the Sangam Period.The Chola dynasty was one of the longest ruling dynasties of Southern India. The period of Chola was very rich in its literature and culture. They are well-known for their good administration and beautiful architecture. They expanded their territory as far as Sri Lanka majorly under the regime of the Raja Raja Chola (985 and 1014 CE).
This very rare copper coin was issued during Sangam Chola period weighs around 5.6g. The obverse side of the coin depicts the image of ‘Standing elephant facing towards the right in front of a tree in the railing and six arched hill, a river flowing with a fish below and taurines and crescent above the elephant. The reverse side of the coin depicts ‘Standing tiger facing towards right upraising his tail.’
