10 Years of Euro Celebrated on New Coins of Malta

The Central Bank of Malta issued a commemorative coin on 9th May to celebrate 10 years since the country adopted the euro. The 15.50 grams €5 cupro-nickel coin is a legal tender only in Malta. It has a mintage limit of 2,000 pieces and can be purchased for €20 each. Struck to Brilliant Uncirculated quality, these coins were designed and minted at the Royal Dutch Mint. The reverse features a representation of ‘Malta’ and ‘Europa‘ to symbolize currency transition from the Maltese lira to the euro in 2008. The coat of arms is depicted on the obverse.Malta became an EU member state on 1 May 2004, after which the country joined the EMU and adopted the single European currency. The stability of public finances, prices, interest rates and the exchange rate had to be considered before adopting the Euro on 1st January 2008.
