Beginning of Delhi Sultanate

After the death of Quth ud Din Aibak in 1210 CE, the hold of Delhi Sultanate came under the hand of Shams ud Din Iltutmish. Iltutmish was sold into the slavery but he married to the daughter of Qutb ud Din Aibak, and succeeded him in the year 1211 CE. Shams ud din Iltutmish was the third ruler of Delhi Sultanate, who belongs to the Mamluk Dynasty or Slave Dynasty. Iltutmish was a leading ruler of Delhi Sultanate and had played a key role in extending his sultanate to a larger area. After sitting on the throne, he destroyed the power of Rajputs and brought whole North India under his control, He also made his capital at Delhi, instead of Lahore.Iltutmish was a great patron of art and architecture. The famous monument Qutab Minar of Delhi was erected by Qutb-ud-Din Aibak, but completed under his supervision. Iltutmish died in the year 1236CE, after him his daughter Raziya Sultan sat on the Delhi throne.
The silver tanka was issued by Iltutmish. The obverse of the coin is inscribed with Shahada ‘- La Ilaha Illaa-Allahu Muhammad-Ur-Rasulullah, Al Muntasir Billah Ameer-Ul-Mominin’ within a square’. The reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Al Sultan Al Azam Sham Al Dunya Wal Din Abul Muzaffar Iltutmish Al Sultan’.
