Silver Shahrukhi of Zahir-ud-Din Muhammad Babur

Babur adopted the Central Asian ‘Shahrukhi’ pattern to issued his silver coin from Kabul mint and finally from Agra which was captured by him from the last Lodi Sultan, Ibrahim Lodhi in the First Battle of Panipat on 21 April 1526.Shahrukhi are the thin broad pieces of silver with Kalima and the names the four Khalifa-e-Rashidoons on the obverse and the reverse has the king’s name and title.
The Shahrukhi standard was adopted by both Humanyu and Akbar in his initial years. Depicted here is one of the examples of silver Shahrukhi issued by Babur from Urdu mint, it was sold for INR 24,000 by Classical Numismatic Gallery.
