Copper Coins of Jahangir

After the death of Akbar in the year 1605, his son Jahangir sat on the Mughal throne. But his formal coronation took place after several months. After sitting on the Mughal throne, he ordered that no coins will be issued with his name till he is crowned at Delhi.Jahangir was the fourth Mughal Emperor who ruled for almost 22 years from 1605 CE to 1627 CE. The real name of Jahangir was Nur-ud-din Muhammad Salim. He took the title Nur-ud-din Muhammad Jahangir Badshah Ghazi after sitting on the throne.
Jahangir issued coins in all three metals gold, silver and copper. In copper Jahangir issued denomination like Dam, Half-Dam, Quarter-Dam, One-Eighth Dam, Tanka Falus and Half-Falus. Copper Tanka issued by Jahangir weighs around 40g and the copper Dam issued by him weighs around 20.2-20.9g. Weight of the Half-Dam issued by him weighs around 9.5-10.5g. Both Quarter-Dam and One-Eighth Dam issued by him weighs around 4.8-5.2g and 2.3-2.6g each.
This copper Dam was issued by Jahangir during the 7th year if his reign. This copper Dam minted in Agra weighs around 20.3g. On the obverse the coin is inscribed with the word ‘Rawani’ with the Hijri year 1021. On the reverse coin is inscribed with mint name Agra. Image Courtesy: Todywalla Auction
