History of Rs.2 coins
2018-04-18 Wed
India’s financial evolution is just as interesting and intriguing as her glorious past. Starting from the ancient Punch Marked Coins to the current facade of the Lion capitals and a smiling Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian currency has undergone great changes which have uniquely defined it.Today let’s see a brief history of Rs. 2 coins.
Though the journey of Rupee 2 coins starts with its first introduction in 1982, when two commemorative coins were issued honouring ‘National Integration’ and the ‘IX Asian Games’, it was first introduced for general circulation (definitive) in 1990.
These coins were first struck in Cupro-Nickel and later in 2005 began to be struck in Ferritic Stainless Steel.
Sporting the pride of India’s unity on its reverse (National Integration), the Rupee 2 coins depict the Lion Capital, India’s National Emblem on its obverse. This design, with negligent changes, remained the same since its inception in the 1990s to 2004. The new coins struck in stainless steel from 2005 and in 2007. The design underwent further changes and the issues of 2011-12 saw the new rupee symbol with floral designs on the reverse.
Rupee 2 coins, with a large flan and distinct edges, have always had an ‘edge’ over the rest of the coins. Rupee 2 coins (the older issues) have as less as 8 and as many as 11 sides to it! Furthermore, some of the varieties struck in pure or more percentage of nickel have magnetic properties!
Interesting isn’t it?
