Gold half Pagoda of Aurangzeb
2018-04-17 Tue
Aurangzeb Alamgir was the sixth emperor of the Mughal dynasty who ruled from 1658 to 1707 AD. His coins list only name and titles, along with dates and the mint names. One of his gold half Pagoda which weighs around 1.73g minted at Gandikota was sold for INR 19,000 by Classical Numismatic Gallery. The obverse of the coin inscribed with Persian legend in two lines Alamgir Shahi followed by traces of AH date. The reverse of the coins bears legend Gandikota (the word Zarb is uncertain, it could well be the denomination Partap inscribed in Persian).
Gandikota, also known as Ganjikota is a fort located on the banks of the river Pannar, in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. Although undated, it is almost certain that this coin was struck in the first decade of the 18th century, in final years of Aurangzeb's reign, when Muhammad Said was in charge of Gandikota.
