International Day of Human Spaceflight

In the glory of the 50th anniversary of first Human flight in space, the General Assembly in 2011 decided to celebrate 12th April as the International Day of Human Space Flight.This date also marks the first human spaceflight carried out by Yuri Gagarin. This historic movement opened the space exploration for the benefit of the humankind. The assembly also expressed its conviction for promoting mankind’s interest and expand the exploration and uses of outer space.
The purpose of celebrating this event at international level is to mark the beginning of the space era and also to validate the important contribution of space science and technology in achieving development goals.
In 2011, the United Nations Postal Administration issued stamps commemorating the 50 years of man’s first flight in space.
Interesting facts:
Yuri Gagarin was a Soviet citizen; she is also the first space explorer who orbited the earth in Vostok 1.
