Emperor Penguins on Coins by Poboy Mint

2016-02-25 Thu

Antarctica’s very own Emperor Penguins, the tallest and heaviest of their sister species feature on the reverse design of a new coin released by Poboy Mint, sliding into the sea from an ice pack. Apart from the .990 fine titanium £2 coin, the emperor penguin design is available also on Uncirculated copper-nickel £2 and Proof .925 fine silver £2 coins.

These unique penguins trek for 50 to 120 kilometers in winters over the ice to breeding colonies, unlike any other kind of penguins. They can be identified by the black dorsal on their sides and head, a white belly, pale yellow breast and bright yellow ear patches.

The obverse of the coins carries the Pobjoy Mint’s exclusive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The silver and titanium coins are encapsulated each in an acrylic capsule for protection from chemical reactions, and each capsule is encased in a red box with a certificate of authenticity.
