Copper Paisa of Janjira

Janjira was a Princely State during the British rule in India. The rulers of Janjira belonged to the Sidi Dynasty of African descent. Janjira is a place which is located in Konkan coast, in the present-day Raigad district of Maharashtra.Janjira is also known as Murud-janjira. The word Janjira has originated from the Arabic word ‘Jazeera’ which means an island. The Jal-Durg (Sea Fort) of Janjira was constructed by Abssynian Minister Malik Ambar the Sultan of Ahmednagar, who belonged to the Nizamshahi dynasty. This fort still stands within the ravages of wind and tides. It is an amazing specimen of medieval architectural engineering.
