Koli National Park Celebrated on Latest Finnish Coin

Finland’s National Landscapes are being honoured through a €5 nine-coin series in 2018. The first one will celebrate Koli National Park. A circulating commemorative €2 version of the same coin will also be released in the future. The nine national landscapes for the special coin program were selected through a public poll in which Koli National Park received the most number of votes.The obverse is designed by Erkki Vainio and features a view from the summit of Ukko-Koli. The reverse is designed by Mari Metso and depicts a map of Finland. The designs are based on a photograph taken by Juha-Pekka Järvenpää.
The mintage limit of this ringed-bimetallic €5 coin would be 3,000 for Proof versions and 15,000 Uncirculated versions. The mintage limit would be the same for all coins in the series. The €2 version has the same obverse design and has a mintage limit of 1 million pieces.
Koli National Park was established in 1991is and is spread across 30 square kilometres. It comprises of forested hills on the western shore of Lake Pielinen. The area is used for slash-and-burn agriculture to preserve traditional agricultural heritage. Traditional Finnish breeds of cow and sheep graze in the park.
