2016-02-23 Tue

The Royal Canadian Mint recently released the first of a 3-coin subscription, made of 99.99% silver, featuring a coloured reverse design depicting a vintage plane from the World War I era.

This new coin series features three of the most successful Allied fighter planes of the First World War, Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a, Sopwith Triplane and Curtiss H-12, beginning with the British-built Royal Aircraft Factory S.E. 5a. This fighter plane was introduced in 1917 and could fly up to 222 km/h by remaining airborne for more than two hours. These salient features of the plane enabled the Allies to regain and maintain air superiority until the war’s end in 1918.

Canadian artist David A. Oram designed the Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a aircraft Silver Coin. All three aircraft will be showcased in colour on the reverse of each respective coin.
