This day was first observed by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) in 1961. People all over the world celebrate this day annually on the 27th March. It is celebrated throughout the world by theatre professionals, theatre lovers, universities, and schools.

The day is observed to make the government, politicians, and institutions aware of the importance of this art-form. The other objective is to highlight its value to the people and promote its potential for the economic growth.

The concept of theatre is quite ancient in India. The struggle for independence was not only for economic or political gains. It was a struggle to reassert India’s cultural identity. The foundation named Indian People’s Theatre Association (ITPA) was the first initiative. To commemorative this achievement, India Post issued a stamp in 1994.

When we talk about theatre, we cannot forget the doyen of Hindi theatre, Shri Prithviraj Kapoor. His passion for this art and his dream of theatres gave birth to Prithiv theatre in 1978 after his demise. To celebrate the Golden Jubilee year of its foundation, India Post issued a commemorative stamp in 1995.
