On 23rd March 1931, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev walked to their gallows with heads held high. To have such courage and valour in face of certain death, to love your motherland over and above everything, to happily give away your lives at tender ages…Their souls had to be made of something different.
Charged with the murder of a British Officer J.P. Saunders, they were given death penalty and were hanged in the Lahore jail. To remember and honour their sacrifice and to pay homage to these great heroes of India, 23rd of March is declared as Martyrs' Day. Their death marked an end of one of the influential eras of Indian Freedom Struggle.
The Reserve Bank had issued Rs.5 denomination coins to commemorate Bhagat Singh's birth anniversary. The obverse of this coin is divided into three portions with two horizontal lines the left centre shows Lion capital of Ashoka with the legend “Satyameva Jayate” in Devanagari inscribed it below and denomination “5” on right. In the upper portion, the words "Bharat " in Devanagari and "INDIA" in Roman and in the lower portion, the words '' Rupaye '' in Devanagari and "RUPEES" in Roman and the reverse of the coin displays the portrait of 'Bhagat Singh' with words in Devanagari and Roman. The year of issue 2007 shows below in central design.
India post has also issued a special postage in honour of Bhagat Singh and Rajguru.
Mintage World pays tribute to these great heroes who readily gave up their lives to pave the path for the independence of his nation. Though dead, they still are living in the history of humanity and remembered as prominent faces of the freedom struggle.
