Journey of the Australian Kangaroo One Tonne Gold Coin
2016-02-22 Mon
The Perth Mint has taken yet another leap and after a lustrous history of coinage behind it, has today made a grand re-entry into the global gold market. The ownership of the mint’s operations transferred from the British Government to the local Government of Western Australia in 1970. When there was a considerable rise in the global gold demand, in the 1900s, some challenging reforms were made and the modern era of The Perth Mint began. The first assignment of Gold Corporation established by the state, was to launch Australia’s official gold bullion coin program to capture a share of the worldwide market.
Australian Kangaroo One Tonne Gold Coin is one of the greatest achievements in the history of the Perth Mint. Coin collectors from all over the world were thrilled like never before when this humongous coin was unveiled at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth in October 2011. Measuring a whopping 80cm in diameter and 13cm deep, the king-sized masterpiece earned its name as the ‘largest coin’ in the 2012 Guinness World Records.
From Hong Kong to Vienna, then across Germany to its final destination of Berlin, this record-breaking coin went on a long world tour to reach out to a larger audience and to commemorate 25 years since the inauguration of the investor program’s iconic faunal design.
Today the Australian Kangaroo One Tonne Coin is back at The Perth Mint, where it works its magic on collectors and admirers flocking in at the premier precious metals fair held in February each year.
