A Letter Sells for Record Price
2018-03-16 Fri
A letter written by an American first-class passenger aboard the Titanic sold on Saturday at auction for a record price of 126,000 pounds.Alexander Oskar Holverson, a salesman, wrote the letter to his mother on April 13, 1912, on embossed Titanic stationery. In it, Mr Holverson describes a “giant” ship “fitted up like a palatial hotel.” He also writes if all goes well we will arrive in New York Wednesday.”
However, the next day, the British passenger ship hit an iceberg and eventually sank, killing more than 1,500 people.
The letter has been in the North Atlantic. It is actually a miracle that it has survived. Though it is not in a good condition it’s readable. The letter will go in a personal collection – a collector based in the U.K. who just collects iconic items from history.
Mr Holverson and his wife, Mary, had boarded the Titanic in Southampton, England, on their way back home to New York. She survived, but he did not. The letter was recovered, along with his body, and given to his mother.
This letter bears a witness to a historical event of the sinking of “Unsinkable” and even more great moments that followed after its discovery.
