2018-03-16 Fri

As per the new legislation of Taiwan, authoritarian symbols like effigies of President Chiang Kai-shek might be taken off from the country’s banknotes and coins. A Transitional Justice Committee will be appointed to study the symbols of Martial Law era, particularly Chiang statues on school campuses and on government land.

Almost NT$50 billion would be required to redesign these notes. Banknotes depicting mountains, animals, and sports scenes will not be replaced. Chiang’s effigy is depicted on the rare NT$200 banknote, apart from NT$1, NT$5 and NT$10 coins.
