2018-03-15 Thu
Abul Muzaffar Muhi-ud-Din Muhammad Aurangzeb was the sixth Mughal Emperor of India. His reign lasted for almost half a century (from 1658 to 1707) and was marked by several conquests and the vast expansion of the Mughal Empire. When Aurangzeb sat on the Mughal throne in the year 1658 AD, in place of the Kalima he introduced Badr Munir/Mihr Munir couplets on his coins, as he did not want to defile the holy Kalima through its association with the monetary transactions of the infidels.
This silver rupee was issued by him from the mint Sikandarah during the 45th year of his reign. The obverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Sikka Zad Dar Jahan Chu Badr Munir Badshah Aurangzeb Alamgir’ with AH date ‘1112’. The reverse of the coin is inscribed with the ‘Julus Formula, RY 45 and the mint name ‘Sikandarah’.
This extremely rare silver rupee was sold for INR 60,000 by Classical Numismatic Gallery Auction House.
