Birth Anniversary of George Washington

2016-02-22 Mon

US’s First President, George Washington, was born on 22nd February 1731 in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

He was also the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and during his lifetime was called the "father of his country".

But interestingly enough HE WAS NOT BORN ON FEBRUARY 22, 1732. Washington was actually born on February the 11th, 1731, but when the colonies switched to the Gregorian calendar from the Julian calendar, his birthday was moved by eleven days and one year, and hence his birthday was changed to 22nd February, 1732. In 1976 Washington was posthumously awarded the highest rank in the U.S. military, General of the Armies of the United States.

Series of 1869 notes were the first one dollar bills The United States issued that had an image of George Washington. When the U.S. Post Office released its first two postage stamps in 1847, George Washington, along with Benjamin Franklin, were depicted on these premier issues. George Washington also features on the Presidential One Dollar coins.

Also in 1982 a George Washington Commemorative Half Dollar was issued to mark the beginning of the modern commemorative coin era. The coin was issued to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of George Washington.
