2018-03-08 Thu
Top-graded coins are always grabbing the limelight because collectors want them included in PCGS and NGC Registry Set programs. Finest-known grades of common coins are also being sold by various auction houses to satisfy this demand. GreatCollections auction sold a 1970-D Kennedy half dollar, graded PCGS MS 67 from the Centurion Collection for $4,443.75 on 4th February. These coins were included in Uncirculated Coin sets that year and not for circulation. Most examples of this coin are graded MS-64 to MS-65. Only 560 such coins are graded MS-66, 16 such coins are graded MS-66+ and only 14 coins are graded MS-67. Only two more examples have been graded MS 67 by PCGS in the last 4 years.
Another example of the same grade PCGS MS-67 was sold in August 2014 for $4,112.50, when there were only 11 other similarly graded examples. It was resold again in January 2017 for $3,760. Even though the coin has a large mintage, it is a key date for registry set collectors.
