2016 Patricia Nixon First Spouse Gold Coins Launched

2016-02-19 Fri

On 18th February, the United States Mint started taking orders for 2016-W $10 Patricia Nixon First Spouse Gold Coins. Featuring a portrait of Patricia Nixon, wife of the 37th U.S. President Richard Nixon, they are composed of one-half ounce of 24-karat gold. This release would almost end the First Spouse Gold Coin Program which started in 2007 along with commemorative coins dedicated to deceased United States presidents.

Obverses bear a portrait of Patricia Nixon, as created by Richard Masters and sculpted by Don Everhart. Surrounding the effigy are inscriptions of ‘PATRICIA NIXON’, ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’, ‘LIBERTY’, ‘2016’, ‘37th’, and ‘1969-1974’. Obverses also include initials of the artists and a "W" mint mark denoting their production at the U.S. Mint facility in West Point.

Pat Nixon’s notable contributions are portrayed on the reverse with stylized figures standing hand in hand around a globe. Richard Masters also designed the reverse while Jim Licaretz sculpted it. Their initials are shown toward the lower portion of the design.

Just two more first ladies will be honoured in the program. These include the:

2016-W $10 Betty Ford First Spouse Gold Coins scheduled for release on Mar. 25

2016-W $10 Nancy Reagan First Spouse Gold Coins scheduled for release in July.
