India's First Lady Doctor Featured on a Special Cover

Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi was one of the first South Asian female physicians and the first Indian female physician, to be trained in the tradition of Western medicine. She was India’s first lady to qualify as a doctor from the USA in 1886.

Brought up in an Orthodox Marathi Brahmin Family, during that period, the girls were refrained from education. Anandibai Joshi not only received basic education, she also went abroad to complete advanced studies and became a Doctor.

This extraordinary achievement of hers was commemorated by Maharashtra Philatelic Society featuring her on a Special cover.

A Special Cover Featuring Nasik Dhol was issued during Mahapex 2016 held at Nasik. Mahapex-2016, Maharashtra State Level Philatelic Exhibition was held from 16th to 18th January 2016 at Nasik. During the occasion, two special covers were issued. One of them featured the first Lady Doctor of India – Mrs. Anandibai Gopal Joshi.

The cover depicts the portrait of Mrs. Anandibai Joshi in black and white, along with her signature and the Women’s college of Medicine on the Background. The special cover comes with a Women Empowerment Stamp issued in 2015.
