2016-02-16 Tue

The 1st Antarctic Expedition of India in 1983 was honoured by issuing a commemorative stamp featuring the Expedition.

Shortly after the foundation of the Department of Ocean Development, the first scientific expedition to the Antarctica was organised. A team of 21 members touched the frozen continent in Jan 1982.

The scientific station was named as “Dakshin Gangotri”. The motto behind the expedition was to study the unique and unpolluted environment to monitor the pollution elsewhere in the world.

This achievement was honoured with a Rs.5 stamp issued by India Post. The stamp is based on a photograph taken by the Department of Ocean Development showing the Indian Scientists in their camp in Antarctica.
