Remembering the Father of Indian Cinema-Dadasaheb Phalke

Dhundiraj Govind Phakle, famous as Dadasaheb Phalke, passed away on 16th February in 1944 at Nashik. He was an Indian producer-director-screenwriter and cinematographer. His debut film “Raja Harischandra” in 1913 is regarded as the first full length motion picture film of India.Dadasaheb Phalake has been described as 'Chitrapat Maharshi'- the great sage of cinema and also is considered as the “Father of the Indian Cinema”. He made 95 movies and 26 short films in his career spanning 19 years, till 1937, including his most noted works: Mohini Bhasmasur (1913), Satyavan Savitri (1914), Lanka Dahan (1917), Shri Krishna Janma (1918) and Kaliya Mardan (1919).
The Government of India in 1969 has started the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, for lifetime contribution to cinema and this award is one of the most prestigious awards in Indian cinema and the highest official recognition in the country.
India Post in 1971 issued a commemorative postage stamp of 20 Paise depicting the portrait of Dadasaheb Phalke in a film strip with a line drawing of the cine camera to its right.
