2016-02-12 Fri

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge, a special commemorative 2 Euro coin is being released in Luxembourg City.

Nicknamed as “Red Bridge”, this architectural beauty was inaugurated in 1966, crossing the Pfaffenthal district about 243 feet above the Alzette River. It was named after Grand Duchess Charlotte, who was then ruling the nation.

The obverse of the coin shows the bridge connecting the city center of Luxembourg to the urban quarter of Kirchberg. The text ‘PONT GRANDE-DUCHESSE CHARLOTTE’ which translates to “Bridge Grand Duchess Charlotte” and the year it opened, ‘1966’, are inscribed on the image of the bridge. The obverse also features an effigy of Grand Duke Henri, the year of issuance ‘2016’ and the word ‘LUXEMBOURG’. The reverse carries the common European map design.
