2016-02-11 Thu

What can be considered as one of the most unique and well-thought choices of imagery that can be illustrated on a coin, The Norse god Odin, who according to a myth sacrificed himself by hanging from Yggdrasil, a giant tree, home to several animals. Symbolising healing, death, royalty, the gallows, knowledge, battle, sorcery and poetry, The Norse god Odin, husband of the goddess Frigg, will now feature on an ultra-high relief 2016 coin from Niue.

Issued by Helvetic Mint in Switzerland, this Proof .999 fine silver $5 coin is the first in a four-coin series celebrating Norse gods.

The reverse features a design created by artist Heidi Wastweet where Odin appears with his pair of wolves, Freki and Geri, and a pair of ravens, Muninn and Huginn.

An inscription of Raphael Maklouf’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with added dragon ornamentation patterning is featured on the obverse which is created by Wastweet.
