2016-02-11 Thu
Royal Australian Mint does something unbelievable once again and goes Full Monty! A 2016 commemorative $5 high relief .999 fine silver coin bears Australia Zoo’s most loved crocodile, Monty. This practice of highlighting animals from the zoo has been a part of a special yearly program since the last 4 years. After being adopted by the zoo, Monty not just grew in size (3.7 meters and 400 kilograms, about 12 feet long and 882 pounds), but also became a movie star. He shared the screen with Steve and Terri Irwin in the 2002 film The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course.
The reverse which features Monty is designed by B. King and the obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
