91st Anniversary of the First Indian Electric Train

Exactly 91 years ago, the Electric Train service which has made commutation absolutely convenient in India, was first inaugurated between Bombay VT and Kurla Harbour on 3rd Feb 1925.

The section was electrified on 1500 Volt DC. Within a few years, the service was extended to connect other major areas and cities like Igatpuri, Colaba and Borivili, Madras beach and Tambaram. Thus before independence, India already had 388 KM of DC electrification.

Post independence, the Howrah – Burdwan project by Eastern Railway was undertaken on 3000 Volt DC as per the 1st five year plan and was completed in 1958.

A special commemorative stamp has been issued depicting the Indian electric locomotive train.
