Indian Museum Kolkata was established

The Indian Museum is the largest and oldest museum in India. It has rare collections of antiques, armour and ornaments, fossils, skeletons, mummies, and Mughal paintings.

It was founded by the Asiatic Society of Bengal in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, in 1814. The founder curator was a Danish botanist, Dr. Nathaniel Wallich. In February 2, 1814, Dr Nathaniel Wallich wrote a letter supporting the formation of a museum in Calcutta. The museum was established and Wallich was named the Honorary Curator of the Museum.

In 2014, the oldest museum of India completed its bicentenary, a souvenir sheet of 3 commemorative postage stamps of INR 20 and INR 5 was released to celebrate it.
