Accidental Coin Discovery Near Zurich Provides Clues to Medieval Money Networks
2016-01-22 Fri
While investigating the topographical area of a forest near Zurich for potential research, an employee of the canton Zurich’s archaeological department discovered a hoard of over 200 coins. The coins date back to between 1295 and 1320 CE and provide clues to how money was circulated in the region during the medieval era. The hoard contains coins that amount to around 2 months worth of income for a preacher in the area during the medieval period.Very few coins are known to have come from Zurich. Most coins in circulation in medieval Switzerland were issued in neighbouring countries. The coins from the hoard will be transferred to Winterthur Coin Collection for further study and comparison with previous discoveries.
