2016-01-21 Thu
Manueline is an intricate style of architectural ornamentation which flourished in the late Gothic Age. It is beleved that the Portuguese invented this style of architecture especially under Dom Manuel I, a significant Portuguese ruler. The architecture is based on that of the late Gothic era coupled with motifs from Flanders, Spain, and the Italian Renaissance. The obverse showcases a stunning view of the nave of Santa Maria des Mosteiro dos Jerónimos Abbey in Belém, Lisbon. The reverse depicts the famous window in the chapter house of the Convento de Cristo in Tomar. The red inlaid Tiffany glass in the window on the coin places this beauty in the Part VI Palau’s 2011 Tiffany Art series collection, which issues some of the most creatively designed coins of the world.
