Army Day!

2016-01-15 Fri

Army Day is celebrated on 15 January every year in India. This day is celebrated to recognise the shift of military powers from the British control to Indian.

It was on this day that Lieutenant General (later Field Marshal) K. M. Cariappa took over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India, on 15 January 1949. It is celebrated to pay homage and salute to the courageous and brave Indian soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for protecting the country.

The celebrations start by paying tribute to the martyrs at the “Amar Jawan Jyoti” at India Gate in New Delhi. This is followed by parades and other military shows in the capital, New Delhi, and at the various headquarters.

On 15 January 2016 India is celebrating the 68th Indian Army day in New Delhi.

Jai Jawan!
