Aurangzeb’s Gold Mohur Sold for INR 70,000

Aurangzeb was the sixth ruler of the Mughal Empire, also considered being the last effective ruler. His real name was 'Abu'l Muzaffar Muhi-ud-Din Muhammad' also known by his regnal title ‘Alamgir' which means ‘He who seizes the universe'.

It is contemplated that during his reign, Mughal Empire reached its greater extent. He extended the boundaries of the Mughal Empire beyond Sutlej river in north and Deccan in the south.

Aurangzeb was engaged in a constant warfare for expansion and to maintain a good stronghold that he had built by maintaining a massive army. He managed campaigns in the Deccan regions against the Marathas, who are known for their guerrilla warfare.

Aurangzeb also took an exceptional interest in minting coins. This gold mohur of Aurangzeb was minted in ‘Dar-ul-Jihad Hyderabad'.The obverse of the coin inscribed as ‘Sikka Zad Dar Jahan Chu Mihr-e-munir Badshah Aurangzeb Alamgir with AH '1114'. The Reverse of this coin depicts ‘Julus Formula, RY 46 and Mint Name with epithet Dar-ul-Jihad Hyderabad'.

This gold mohur weighs around 11g and was sold for INR 70,000 at Todywalla Auction on 26th January 2013.
