George Cassim Collection of Modern Greek Currency to be Auctioned

2017-04-19 Wed

The George Cassim Collection of Modern Greek Coins and Banknotes will be auctioned on 28th April through Spink Auctions London.

George Cassim is the son of Greek migrants from Kythera and was a collector of ancient currency. He went to Greece very often and met other collectors at Plaka in Athens. He bought many coins for his collection through auctions around the world.

A rare phoenix monetary unit, probably used when Greece got independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1828 is a part of the collection. An 1828 silver phoenix by John Capodistrias (1828-31), struck at Aegina has an estimated value of £600-800. Another highlight is an 1846 half-drachma by King Otto (1832-62) with an estimated value of £4,000-5,000.
