Deadline for Exchanging Old Swiss Banknotes

The 1976 series Swiss notes featuring architect Francesco Borronmini, psychiatrist Auguste Forel etc. are no longer legal tender since 2000. They can be exchanged for current banknotes until 1st May 2020. There have been reports that 1.1 billion francs in 1976 banknotes exist in the country.The Swiss government believes that extending the 20-year limit would make forgeries easier. The value of the outstanding notes after the deadline will be given to a national fund for handling natural disasters.
The ninth banknote series do not depict any particular person like the earlier notes. They feature a characteristic of Switzerland through a place, an action or another graphic element.
The 50 franc note in the theme of ‘wind' and was released in April 2016 six years after the plan was made. The 20 franc note, with the theme of 'light', will be revealed on 10th May 2017.
